Student Programs offers a number of different dining plans. On-campus residents must purchase either the Major or Mega Flex Plan. Review our selection of dining plans and choose the one that is best for you. See minor dining plans for information on plans designed to meet the needs of off-campus students.

Flex Plans 2009-2010

Major Flex Plan: $1,262/semester
Mega Flex Plan: $1,362/semester

Flex Plans are perfect for students who eat meals during nontraditional hours, like to snack, or prefer our à la carte dining centers. Your Flex Plan operates as a debit card account, with which you have a designated amount of Flex Dollars to spend per semester. Flex Dollars can be accessed by using your Hokie Passport ID card when you purchase food and beverages in Student Programs dining centers. Each time you access your Flex account, it will be debited for the amount of your purchase and the remaining balance will appear on your receipt.

Both Flex Plans comprise a $807 base cost and a balance of Flex Dollars. Students with Mega Flex receive $555 in Flex Dollars and students with Major Flex receive $455 in Flex Dollars. The base cost covers utilities, maintenance, repairs, mortgage payments, and the labor needed to support the food service program. The Flex Dollars are used to pay for food and beverages purchased in the dining facilities, with a substantial discount because the base costs are covered. Flex Plan holders receive a 50 percent discount in our à la carte facilities and at least a 67 percent discount in our all-you-care-to-eat dining centers.

Most people don't eat in the dining centers for every meal, so the Major Flex Plan is designed to cover about 10 meals per week throughout the semester, and the Mega Flex Plan provides about 12.

Using Your Flex Dollars

All-You-Care-To-Eat Dining Centers:

Our all-you-care-to-eat dining centers offer a great value to Flex Plan holders compared with those who pay the cash price. Your Flex account will be debited the following amount for each meal:

As a dining plan holder using Flex Dollars, you pay food cost only, not retail prices, so your meal cost is much lower than prices for cash customers because you have already paid the up-front base cost. Visitors to the all-you-care-to-eat dining centers do not receive this reduced rate because they have not paid the base cost, and thus are not vested in our program. When using Flex Dollars there, you'll be getting a 67 percent discount on the cash price. If you choose to treat a guest with your Flex Dollars, your guest will receive the discounted price.

Á La Carte Dining Centers:

Your Flex Dollars may also be used in our à la carte facilities: Deet's Place, Squires Food Court, Owens Food Court, Hokie Grill & Co., DXpress, Shultz Express, West End Market, the Au Bon Pain® at Donaldson Brown, and Vet Med Café. With Flex Dollars, you receive a 50 percent discount on all purchases in these dining centers.

Catering and We Care:

Flex Dollars can be utilized for purchases from Personal Touch Catering, including We Care gift packages. However, no discounts apply; the cash price will be charged.

Flex Addition Dollars

Flex Addition Dollars deposits offer students with a Major or Mega Flex Plan the opportunity to add money to their account and receive the same Flex discounts. Additional money that you deposit into a Flex Dollars account is accessed automatically through your Hokie Passport ID card once the initial Flex Dollars are used. You never have to wonder about your balance, because you can check your account balance on MyVT and it will appear on the receipt every time you access your account. Flex Addition Dollars will receive the Flex discount as long as you have purchased a major dining plan for that semester. Flex Addition Dollars revert to Dining Dollars if you don't have a major dining plan. Since Flex Addition Dollars are only accepted in Student Programs dining centers, parents and guardians can be sure that this money will be spent only on food and beverages.

Deposits

Flex Addition Dollars deposits may be made online at any time during the year. You can also make deposits at a cash-to-card machine, which can be found at G. Burke Johnston Student Center, Owens Food Court, the Math Emporium, Squires Student Center, the Student Services Building, West End Market, or outside of Hokie Grill & Co.

You can also sign up for Flex Addition Dollars online. Flex Addition Dollars deposits carry over from year to year and remain stored on your Hokie Passport ID card until you graduate or resign from the University, as long as you continue to purchase a major dining plan each semester. If you do not purchase a major dining plan, your Flex Addition Dollars deposits will revert to Dining Dollars. If the account is not used for a period of 12 consecutive months, it will be closed according to state policy (see Dining Plan Refund Policy).
