Dining Frequently Asked Questions

Dining Centers

Where can I find dining center hours and menus?
Dining center hours of operation and daily menus are posted on the web for your convenience. Hours of operation are also posted near the entrance to each dining facility. Menus are posted at each serving line or shop.

The daily menu pages feature menus for all the dining centers with vegan and vegetarian items labeled, nutrition information and an ingredient list for menu items. You can even calculate the nutrition totals for the meals you eat, or plan meals using the interactive nutritive analysis program. Just click on the YES apple logo at the top of each menu to use these features.

Dining Dollars

How do I make Dining Dollars deposits?
Deposits may be made at any time during the semester online, at the Hokie Passport Office (located at 100 Student Services Building), or by using the DART Cash-to-Card machines, which can be found at G. Burke Johnston Student Center, the Math Emporium, Squires Student Center, the Student Services Building, West End Market, or outside of Hokie Grill & Co.

Flex Plans

How can I add more money to my Major or Mega Flex Plan?
As a Major or Mega Flex Plan holder, you can purchase Flex Addition Dollars at any time and still receive the same Flex discount as long as you have a major dining plan. You never have to wonder about your balance because it will appear on your receipt every time you access your account. You can also easily check your account balance online on the “Personal Info” page of MyVT. For your convenience, you can make Flex Addition Dollar deposits online. You can also make deposits at the Hokie Passport Office in the Student Services Building or at a cash-to-card machine, which can be found at G. Burke Johnston Student Center, the Math Emporium, Squires Student Center, the Student Services Building, West End Market, or outside of Hokie Grill & Co. Your Flex Addition Dollars will carry over from semester to semester and act just like Flex dollars as long as you have a major dining plan.

If I have Dining Dollars, do I need to add more money to my Flex Plan?
No. If you have Dining Dollars and a Major or Mega Flex Plan and you run out of Flex dollars, your existing Dining Dollars will be converted to Flex Addition Dollars. Flex Addition Dollars cannot be added to a Minor Flex Plan.

If I have money left on my Flex Plan, will it rollover to next semester?
If you do not spend all your initial Flex Dollars by the end of the fall semester, they will carry over and receive the same Flex discount as long as you purchase a dining plan for the spring semester. Flex Dollars must be used by the end of spring semester or you will lose them. Flex Addition Dollars deposits carry over from semester to semester as long as you are a student, and will continue to receive the Flex discount as long as you have a major dining plan.

Family Flex Bonus

What is a Family Flex Bonus and how do I use it?
A Family Flex Bonus is a separate account given to dining plan holders so that they can treat family or friends to dinner when they come to visit. The bonus is $6.50 Flex Dollars.

You can use this Family Flex Bonus during the Fall or Spring semester on Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays at D2, Owens Food Court, or West End Market. At Owens Food Court and West End Market, your purchasing power is doubled: you will receive a 50 percent discount on your meal using your Family Flex Bonus, just like your regular Flex Dollars do. This means you could spend up to $13.00 at those dining centers.  At D2, your Family Flex Bonus will save you at least 67 percent off of the cash door price, providing you with two all-you-care-to-eat dinner meals.

The Family Flex Bonus is to be used for your family or guests from out of town—it is not intended to substitute for your own meals and will not be accepted for such. The Family Flex Bonus is only available to you for the current academic year, fall and spring, and does not roll forward to the following semesters.

Simply let your cashier know that you would like to pay for your family member's meal using your Family Flex Bonus, and they will deduct up to $6.50 Flex from that special account using your Hokie Passport card.  If there is a balance due after that, you can use your regular Flex Dollars, Dining Dollars, Hokie Passport, or cash to cover the rest.

Sick Meals

How do I get meals if I am sick?
Students who are sick or unable to visit a dining facility due to a temporary physical disability (e.g. broken leg or back injury) can make special meal arrangements. The manager of D2, Shultz, Owens Food Court, Hokie Grill & Co., or West End Market must be called in advance to arrange for this service. The individual requesting this service must provide the name of the person who will pick up the meal, a meal preference, a time when the meal will be picked up, a telephone number where the student can be reached, and the Hokie Passport of the person requesting the meal.

The individual requesting the meal should write down the name of the manager coordinating the sick meal and give it to the person picking up the meal.

Students must call the manager for each sick meal needed. If the illness or temporary disability extends over two days, a doctor's note detailing the condition must be presented to the manager. A special pass will be issued for these circumstances. Persons requesting meals in Owens Food Court, Hokie Grill & Co., or West End Market must be issued a special pass by the manager.

Use the following phone numbers to arrange for this service:

  • Shultz: 231-6873
  • Owens Food Court: 231-6187
  • Hokie Grill & Co.: 231-6187
  • West End Market: 231-4779
  • D2: 231-6130
