Future Efforts
Virginia Tech’s motto is Ut Prosim (That I May Serve), and as part of the university, we are committed to supporting the local community and preserving our resources.
Here are a few ways Housing and Dining Services plans on supporting the local community and preserving our resources in the future:
- Dining is working to reduce food waste and to begin transferring what we do produce to a local composting service. Once the operation is in place, all campus restaurants will switch from styrofoam to-go containers to ones that are compostable.
- All seven new construction projects in Student Programs' current master building plan will meet requirements for U.S. Green Building Council LEED silver certification or higher.
- A water-conserving, dual flush toilet system is being tested in Ambler Johnston and will be part of the AJ rennovations.
- Housing is in the process of switching common area light bulbs to T8 light fixtures.
- The lounge furniture in the new residence halls will be made with sustainable fabrics.
- Deet's Place currently offers a daily selection of farm-direct Fair Trade coffee and is working on becoming a designated Fair Trade Roaster.
- A plan has been initiated to compost all food scraps and biodegradable to-go containers made from sugar/corn based materials.
- Eventually, Dining Services would like to start a student garden on University land and an herb garden outside of D2 that will supply vegetables and herbs for the dining centers.
