Break Housing

The majority of students living on campus are required to vacate their rooms during the academic breaks.   With the exception of the 10-month contract facilities, the residence halls are closed and secured during Thanksgiving, Winter and Spring breaks.   Consult the Schedule and Rates section for closing and re-opening dates.   Residents who plan to remain in Blacksburg have the following options to arrange housing:
•  Stay with a friend who lives in an off-campus apartment
•  Go to a hotel
•  Arrange to stay with a friend or sponsor who lives in a 10-month contract residence hall

The 10-month contract residence halls include Newman, Hillcrest, Main Campbell, Cochrane, and Donaldson Brown. Residents have the option to register to remain in their room during Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring breaks.   These facilities house unique programs or students who frequently have an academic need to be on campus throughout the 10 months of the academic year, such as graduate students.

10 Month Housing Registration Information
In order to remain in the residence hall during the academic breaks, resident registration is required for the specific days of planned occupancy. By registering, students agree to the special terms and conditions governing break housing outlined in these pages and the registration process.

The purpose of resident registration is to provide staff and emergency personnel adequate information in the event of an emergency, scheduled maintenance, or other such operations.   Registration also ensures that Hokie Passport card access is arranged.   Student Programs staff will be available to meet resident safety, security, and personal needs on the central campus.   A staff-on-duty schedule will be posted in all RA offices.   During the break periods, University policies will continue to be enforced and exterior doors are locked at all times. Any violation of policy may result in immediate removal from the residence halls.   Residents are expected to assist in the safety and security efforts of staff by not propping doors or sharing lock combinations, locking room and/or suite doors, and reporting anything suspicious to the RA on duty or Virginia Tech Police.

Fees

Occupancy during the academic breaks in Newman Hall, Main Campbell Hall, Hillcrest Hall, Cochrane Hall, or the Graduate Life Center at Donaldson Brown does not require payment of additional fees. Occupancy during the breaks is factored into the room rate. Only non-resident guests will be charged for break residence halls and late registration.

Changes to a registration can be made until the published deadline; no changes will be accepted after the deadline and all fees will be due as billed.   If a resident accesses the residence hall at times other than confirmed by registration, corresponding daily fees will be charged.   Fees are billed to the student's university account.

Non-resident guests may be registered by a resident/host.   Guests must occupy the host's room and be of the same sex.   If applicable, the host's roommate must agree to the temporary occupancy.   All guests will be charged $8.00 per day plus tax, $16.00 minimum, regardless of building.   Virginia Tech students will be billed on their student account.   Non-student guests will be billed on their host's student account.   Anyone found living in the residence halls during break that is not a resident or registered guest will be treated as a trespasser.   He/She can be asked to leave immediately and will be escorted by police, if necessary.

Register for Housing during the upcoming Academic Break: Complete the online registration form, including guest registration.   Confirmation will be sent by email, and changes can be made until the published deadline.

Registration option reminders will be sent to residents of 10-month contract residence halls prior to each break.
