bed pins (solid steel rods that allow one bed to be bunked with another) must be stored in the room if the student obtains their own loft or decides to single set the bed. Please note that due to the unique construction of the beds, a self-built/wooden loft will not work in Miles Hall

Loftable Beds

How can I loft my university-provided loftable bed?

Students that have university-provided loftable beds in their rooms may request a "loft kit" to raise their bed to the higher setting. When students arrive on-campus there will be one loft kit in each room in the buildings that are furnished with these beds. Residents that would like to request an additional loft kit for their room when they move in can make these requests to the housekeeping staff that will be available at the check-in tables during move-in. Requests that are made prior to move-in will not be honored.

If after move-in, both roommates in a room wish to loft their beds (except Slusher Tower & Slusher Wing, where only ONE bed is permitted to be lofted), a second kit can be requested at www.studentprograms.vt.edu/housing/facilities.php.

Second loft kits as well as safety rails will be provided by the University on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

What about the rest of us?
Residents of other buildings on campus can opt to bring in or rent an ‘outside loft’, which is a lofting kit that is not provided by the University that fits the beds that are furnished in your assigned building. Outside lofts are prohibited in buildings that are already furnished with University-provided loftable beds.

You can also choose to rent or purchase a kit through an approved RHF vendor (see below), or you may decide to construct your own loft. However, if you decide to build your own loft, be sure to obtain a copy of the loft construction policy and guidelines.

Of course, you don’t have to loft your beds at all. If your room contains bunked beds and you would simply like to un-bunk them, you can request single bed ends from the housekeeping supervisor in your building. Keep in mind that all single beds must be disassembled, re-bunked, and bed ends must be returned before you move out of the room.

How can I rent a loft to use?

The Residence Hall Federation (RHF) offers rental of optional, university-endorsed loft kits. Information about these vendors is available on the RHF website here: www.rhf.vt.edu

The bed frames in these buildings are metal and can be single set or the springs can be used in a loft. In no instance can the bed be left on the tall ends and used as a loft.
