Get Ready for Your Trek to Tech!
By incorporating feedback from students and parents, we have developed move-in procedures that can make the experience enjoyable for everyone involved. This guide will help you negotiate parking and campus patterns, as well as answer some frequently asked questions. We hope it will make your arrival as pleasant as possible. Housing AssignmentsAssignment information for fall semester will be posted on Hokie SPA on July 31. To access your housing assignment:
You will see your housing assignment, roommate information, and arrival information. Your housing assignment page will also contain a link so you can view the dimensions of your room and the hall layout. Move-in Days and Check-in TimesRegular Check-in will be Friday, August 22 and Saturday, August 23 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Early Check-in is available for both new and returning students Wednesday, August 20 and Thursday, August 21 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Please be aware that meals will be served only on a cash, Dining Dollars, or Hokie Passport Account basis until dining plans begin Friday, August 22. Additionally, parking may be more difficult on a university business day. Oak Lane Community (Special Purpose Housing) Check-in will be Tuesday, August 19 through Saturday, August 23. See the Residence Hall Opening/Closing Schedule for more information. Parking and Unloading InformationLocate the unloading area closest to your assigned residence hall on Quick Tips for Move-in
Loft InformationIf you have loftable beds in your room, you may use a loft kit to raise the bed higher. Each of the rooms below should have one loft kit already in the room. If needed, you can submit a work order online or make a request at the check-in desk to have a second kit delivered. Kits are limited, so turn in your request promptly. Buildings with loftable beds: * Oak Lane buildings A, B, C, and K through R (other Oak Lane buildings have loftable beds, but no kit is required) If you would like the special projects team to install the kit, note that request on the work order and provide a phone number so that the team can schedule a time with you. Extra Resources for Move-InWhat to Bring and What to Leave at Home is a checklist of items that we suggest you bring to school in order to live comfortably in a residence hall. Some of the items on the list are for both roommates, and those items (microwave, refrigerator, television, etc.) could be shared if well planned. We highly recommend that you contact your roommate as soon as you get your assignment to determine who will bring what from the shared list. There are also limitations and restrictions you should be familiar with when you move in. Review the information on the fire safety web pages and the residence hall decoration policy. For example, all halogen lights, flammable curtains, and extension cords are prohibited. Resident advisors (RAs) are student leaders and employees who live on each residence hall floor. They will be available at check-in tables and throughout the building during move-in to answer questions you may have. Get Connected computer support teams will be in your residence hall during move-in, Wednesday, August 20 through Saturday, August 23 to help you secure your computer and connect to the Virginia Tech network and the Internet. Securing your computer against viruses is of utmost importance. To secure your computer, run the VTNet CD before connecting to the network. A VTNet CD can be found in your phone package in your residence hall room. For more information about securing your computer, visit the Lock It Down website. To view information about Get Connected, visit the tutorials. Team Hokies is a group of more than 300 student volunteers who help students and their parents move into residence hall rooms during regular check-in on Friday, August 22, and Saturday, August 23. Team Hokies will be located on Washington Street and can be recognized by their T-shirts. These volunteers can help you unload vehicles, watch over belongings while you park your car, and carry items with you to your room. With this additional help, the move-in process becomes much easier and quicker, giving families more time to explore campus, settle in, and say goodbye. Volunteers finish their work in mid-afternoon.
