Students move into the residence halls

By incorporating feedback from students and parents, we have developed move-in procedures that can make the experience enjoyable for everyone involved. This guide will help you negotiate parking and campus patterns, as well as answer some frequently asked questions. We hope it will make your arrival as pleasant as possible.

Parking and Unloading Information

Locate the unloading area closest to your assigned residence hall onPDF Move-in Day Directions to Parking [PDF: 276KB]. There is a 30-minute time limit to unload all belongings in order to keep the traffic moving during the move-in process. You will receive a 30-minute unloading permit when you check into your residence hall. The permit must be displayed and is monitored by Parking Services. After unloading, move your vehicle to the Resident section of the Duck Pond Road Lot, the Litton-Reaves Lot on Duckpond Drive, or the Commuter/Graduate section of the Perry Street and Prices Fork Lots of of Prices Fork Road to park. In order to keep people and traffic flowing, everyone’s participation and patience is appreciated. The logistics for unloading parking have been carefully planned and require your cooperation to be effective. Remember that vehicles are not permitted in service or handicapped parking, or on grassy areas or sidewalks.

Quick Tips for Move-in

  • Bring a handcart to make moving in more efficient.
  • Develop a time-efficient plan that makes maximum use of the 30-minute unloading permit. For example, while the student is checking into the residence hall, other(s) can be unloading the vehicle. Once unloaded, designate someone to remain with the belongings while the vehicle is relocated to long-term parking. Move the belongings into the room after the vehicle has been relocated and check-in completed.
  • Interested in an express unloading option? Plan to check in Friday or Saturday with the help of the Team Hokies; refer to the Extra Resources section below for details. If you plan to check in Wednesday or Thursday, be mindful that they are regular university business days and employees will also be parking on campus.
  • Prepare yourself for a lot of walking and climbing stairs. Many 3- to 4-floor residence halls do not have elevators, and move-in services are only located along Washington Street.  Also, be prepared for heat or rain, which can make move-in conditions less than ideal.
  • Plan to send home or dispose of packing boxes, crates, or other moving supplies. Storage for such items is minimal.
  • Ask questions. Staff members are available in every hall.

Loft Information

Loft Instructions

If you have loftable beds in your room, you may use a loft kit to raise the bed higher. Each of the rooms below should have one loft kit already in the room. If needed, you can submit a work order online or make a request at the check-in desk to have a second kit delivered. Kits are limited, so turn in your request promptly.

Buildings with loftable beds:

* Oak Lane buildings A, B, C, and K through R (other Oak Lane buildings have loftable beds, but no kit is required)
* Harper
* Hillcrest, 3rd floor
* New Residence Hall East
* Peddrew-Yates

If you would like the special projects team to install the kit, note that request on the work order and provide a phone number so that the team can schedule a time with you.

Extra Resources for Move-In

What to Bring and What to Leave at Home is a checklist of items that we suggest you bring to school in order to live comfortably in a residence hall. Some of the items on the list are for both roommates, and those items (microwave, refrigerator, television, etc.) could be shared if well planned. We highly recommend that you contact your roommate as soon as you get your assignment to determine who will bring what from the shared list.

There are also limitations and restrictions you should be familiar with when you move in. Review the information on the fire safety web pages and the residence hall decoration policy. For example, all halogen lights, flammable curtains, and extension cords are prohibited.

Resident advisors (RAs) are student leaders and employees who live on each residence hall floor. They will be available at check-in tables and throughout the building during move-in to answer questions you may have.

Get Connected computer support teams will be in your residence hall during move-in, Wednesday, August 20 through Saturday, August 23 to help you secure your computer and connect to the Virginia Tech network and the Internet. Securing your computer against viruses is of utmost importance. To secure your computer, run the VTNet CD before connecting to the network. A VTNet CD can be found in your phone package in your residence hall room. For more information about securing your computer, visit the Lock It Down website. To view information about Get Connected, visit the tutorials.

Team Hokies is a group of more than 300 student volunteers who help students and their parents move into residence hall rooms during regular check-in on Friday, August 22, and Saturday, August 23. Team Hokies will be located on Washington Street and can be recognized by their T-shirts. These volunteers can help you unload vehicles, watch over belongings while you park your car, and carry items with you to your room. With this additional help, the move-in process becomes much easier and quicker, giving families more time to explore campus, settle in, and say goodbye. Volunteers finish their work in mid-afternoon.
