Student Programs dining centers celebrate Women’s MonthIn honor of National Women’s History Month, Student Programs will host “As Seen On TV: Recipes from Famous Women,” a special dining event featuring recipes from celebrity chefs Rachael Ray and Cat Cora. The event will take place from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 21 at D2 and Shultz Dining Center, and will include cooking demonstrations and hands-on participation directed by members of Virginia Tech’s award-winning culinary team. Carolyn Bess, food production manager for Dietrick Dining Center, will prepare tiramisu from Rachael Ray’s “30-Minute Meals” series on the Food Network, and Adriana Simpson, chef de cuisine for Shultz Dining Center, will prepare Cat Cora’s spanakopita. Both Ray and Cora have gained recognition for succeeding in a profession often dominated by men. With her successful “30-Minute Meals” series on the Food Network, Ray has brought elegant-yet-approachable gourmet meals into the homes of busy cooks across the nation. She also hosts “$40 a Day” on the Food Network, makes frequent appearances on the Oprah Winfrey Show, and has penned eight cookbooks based on her successful shows. Cora is best known for her status as one of four Iron Chefs—and the first female—on the Food Network’s “Iron Chef America.” From her recent Iron Chef fame to her work founding the non-profit organization Chefs for Humanity in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, to her appearances on “Live with Regis and Kelly” and “The Today Show,” Cora’s work proves that women have a place among the best in the culinary business.
