Student Life Office Conducts Campus Climate Check-up

How do you evaluate the character of a university community? How do you gauge an institution's collective attitude toward issues like discrimination and hate crimes?

The Student Life Office plans to address these issues and more at the bi-annual Campus Climate Check-up, which will take place Monday, Nov. 14 from 5:45 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Squires Commonwealth Ballroom. The multi-departmental event is designed to assess the atmosphere at Virginia Tech with programming and group discussion. Students, faculty, and staff are all invited to attend.

Event sponsors plan to explore what the University community can do to promote a healthy and welcoming environment on campus by holding activities aimed at group interaction and dialogue. The sponsoring organizations will provide progress reports about the perceived atmosphere on campus and the attitudes of the Tech community, both in general and toward specific groups and events.

Activities include a small-group discussion on the University response to climate concerns and an “open mic” opportunity for participants to share their opinions, questions, and observations regarding the atmosphere at Tech. There will also be an image theater exercise presented by Anne Kilkelly, professor of theater arts and women's studies in the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies, which will focus on the emotional impact of the issues raised in the event discussions.

Zenobia Hikes, vice president for student affairs; Tom Brown, director of student life; and Kurt Krause, vice president for business affairs will all speak at the event, adding their own remarks and observations about the nature of the Tech community and changes that can be made to improve the quality of life at the University.

This event is sponsored by Cranwell International Center, Multicultural Programs and Services, the offices of Student Life and Student Programs, University Unions and Student Activities, and the Women's Center. Dinner will be provided, so if you plan to attend, please contact the Office of Student Life at stulife@vt.edu by Nov. 11.
