Career Services Connects Virginia Tech Students with 40 of BusinessWeek’s Top 50 Employers

BLACKSBURG, VA, Jan. 17, 2007—Not all students have that first job lined up after graduation, but at Virginia Tech it’s not because of a lack of opportunity. The university’s Career Services department offers programs like resume posting, on-campus interviewing, employer contact databases, and many more resources to help students find an open position, perfect a resume and nail the interview.

And all this won’t help students find just any job—Tech sets students up with 40 out of the 50 most desirable employers in the country, according to BusinessWeek magazine.

Using surveys that incorporate feedback from students and college career services, BusinessWeek named the 50 Best Places to Launch a Career for new college graduates. These companies offer new hires high levels of responsibility, competitive pay and benefits, top-of-the-line training programs, and faster advancement than at other companies—all qualities today’s graduates demand.

Eighty percent of the employers listed (names like Walt Disney, General Electric, Google and NASA) actively recruit students at Virginia Tech. Applicants are hired for internships, co-ops and permanent positions upon graduation.

Career Services facilitated 6,717 on-campus interviews, 584 employer visits, and 278 company visits last year alone. Aside from connecting students directly with employers through the Hokies4Hire program, Career Services offers general, business and industry-related career fairs, job search training programs, business and dining etiquette seminars, post-graduation job reports, an alumni contact program and individual career counseling for students at Virginia Tech.

Students who are interested in kick-starting their careers with the help of Career Services can visit the Career Services building located at the corner of Washington Street and West Campus Drive on the Virginia Tech campus, or call (540) 231-6241.
