GLC transition team nominated for Governor’s Award

BLACKSBURG, Va., March 28, 2007––The Graduate Life Center transition team has recently been recognized for their outstanding work in managing the change over from the Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center to the state-of-the-art GLC––the only one of its kind in the United States. The team has been nominated for the Governor’s Teamwork Award by Dr. Karen P. DePauw, Vice Provost of Graduate Studies and Dean of the Graduate School and Dr. Edward F.D. Spencer, Associate Vice President for Student Affairs. In addition, members of this team were named Virginia Tech’s Employees of the Week for the week of February 26.

The Governor’s Awards will be announced during Virginia’s Public Service Week in May, when the state will recognize the contributions of public employees at the Governor’s Award Ceremony in Richmond. The Teamwork Award is given to a group of employees that consistently exhibit the qualities that make teamwork essential to an agency’s success, including coordination of efforts to produce quality service or innovative results.

In January 2004, the space that was then a hotel and conference center was designated as the future site of the new Virginia Tech Graduate Life Center, after it was determined that graduate and professional students needed their own areas and venues on campus. The hotel vacated the building on June 30, 2005 and the GLC planned to let residents move in on August 14. There was some question as to whether all of the preparation and changes could happen in such a short amount of time. However, with the leadership, commitment and determination of the transition team, the facility successfully opened on time.

The team oversaw remodeling efforts, created new policies, hired staff and prepared to move in more than 100 residents, among other tasks. Team members went above and beyond their duties to complete the project––most evident when new students reported that they didn’t realize that the GLC had been a hotel just one month prior.

Team members include: Monika Gibson, Director of Student Services, Graduate School; Allison Malloy, Complex Director, Student Programs; Tim Gift, Associate Director of Facilities Management, Residential Programs; Erika Golart, Graduate Student Services Coordinator, Graduate School; Margie Lawrence, Assistant Director for Housekeeping and Furnishings, Housing and Dining Services; Chris Moore, Business Manager, Dining Services; Scott Reed, Associate Director of University Unions and Student Activities; and Jeremy Sippel, Information Technology Manager, Graduate School.
