UMBC president to speak in honor of black Greek movement’s 100th anniversaryBlacksburg, VA, Mar. 17, 2006—The National Pan Hellenic Council will continue its centennial celebration of the black fraternity and sorority movement with a presentation by Freeman A. Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. The presentation, which focuses on student involvement and the benefits of Greek affiliation, will take place at 4 p.m. Friday, March 24 in the Haymarket Theatre of Squires Student Center. Hrabowski is known for his work on higher education in science and mathematics, with a special emphasis on minority participation and performance. He played an active role in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s and was featured in "Four Little Girls," a 1997 documentary by Spike Lee about the racially motivated bombing of Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala. in 1963. Hrabowski has also co-authored two books on parenting academically successful African American students, "Overcoming the Odds" (Oxford University Press, 2001) and "Beating the Odds" (Oxford University Press, 1998). Hrabowski’s visit to Virginia Tech is part of the year-long celebration of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity’s inception in 1906, and therefore the beginning of the black fraternity and sorority movement. This event is sponsored by the National Pan Hellenic Council, the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life, the Office for the Vice President of Student Affairs, and the Office of Multicultural Affairs.
