Indulge in Shultz’s Pirate AdventureBLACKSBURG, Va., Sept. 12, 2006—Students, faculty and staff are invited to attend Captain Growley’s Pirate Adventure, an extravagant themed dinner event at Shultz Dining Center. The adventure, held Tuesday, September 19 (International Talk Like a Pirate Day) from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., will feature challenges, prizes and Dave Deshler, an impersonator of Jack Sparrow from the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies. The event is planned to thank current Shultz customers and to help attract new ones. It is named in honor of J.H. “Growley” Shultz, the university’s original mess steward and Shultz Dining Center’s namesake. The sea-inspired menu offers something for everyone, with items ranging from steamed crab legs and key lime pie, to spiritless grog, conch fritters and salmagundi (a piratical delicacy). The goal is to top 1,000 guests for the meal, while the typical dinner volume is around 350. A weeklong treasure hunt is leading up to the event, taking students to each dining center on campus with clues designed so that participants must actually go inside to answer the riddles. Those students who solve the treasure hunt will be entered into a drawing for a flat-panel HDTV, a DVD player, and a "Pirates of the Caribbean" DVD. “We are looking forward to an outstanding evening,” said Ted Faulkner, associate director of Housing and Dining Services. “We hope to continue in our long line of nationally acclaimed theme events with this pirate adventure.” Shultz is an all-you-care-to-eat dining center located on the upper quad of the Virginia Tech campus. Special meal prices are $3.70 for Flex Plan holders and $11.65 cash, Hokie Passport and Dining Dollars.
