Frequently Asked Theme Housing Questions
Do I have to be accepted to Virginia Tech (or have accepted
an admissions offer to attend Virginia Tech) before applying for a theme housing program?
No. You do not have to be accepted to Virginia Tech (or have accepted an offer
of admission) at the time of your application for theme housing.
Is a certain academic major required for theme housing?
To participate in Hypatia or Galileo you must be accepted to the College
of Engineering. To participate in the Biological Life Sciences Learning Community
you must have a major in a life science area. All other programs do not
require a specific academic major.
What do I do if I have entered the database and received a confirmation
e-mail, but it does not have the essay questions in it?
Contact Theme Housing Programs at themevt@vt.edu
or 540-231-6205.
What is the timeline for the application process?
Applications are accepted until each program is full. For priority consideration, applications and essay responses should be submitted no later than May 1, 2008.
Can I apply to more than one program?
Yes. However, we allow students to apply to no more than two programs. When
you begin the online application process you will be asked to prioritize your
first and second choice between the two programs.
When can I expect to hear the decision regarding my application?
Applications are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis. Notification of results
varies with each of the programs. While some programs will notify you shortly after
a decision is made, other programs may wait until specified dates in the
spring. Typically, notification will not begin until March and continues on a
rolling basis thereafter.
I tried to apply for a theme housing program, but I don't know my student ID
number. How can I find out what this number is?
If you have not yet been accepted to Virginia Tech, please use your application
number. This is the nine-digit number that begins with the number nine.
If you have been accepted to Virginia Tech, it is the nine-digit number that
begins with the number nine and is labeled "student ID number."
My preferred roommate and I both applied for the same program. I was
accepted, but my preferred roommate was not. What are my options?
Due to limited space, some students are not accepted for a theme housing
program. In this case you have two options. You can accept the offer to
live in theme housing without your current roommate preference or you can decline
the theme housing program and request to be placed in traditional housing (non-themed)
with your preferred roommate.
How will I be notified about the status of my application?
You will receive an e-mail that will inform you of your application status.
If you are accepted into a program, the e-mail will contain instructions for
how you can accept the offer and confirm your participation in the program.
I keep getting a "Page not found" message when I use the
Web link sent to me by the theme housing server. What do I do?
Please be sure to shut your Web browser down completely before attempting to
link to the theme housing login page. If this doesn't work, cut and paste the
Web address into the address bar of a new browser window. This should solve
the problem.
If I have further questions regarding the process. Is there a person
I can contact?
Please contact James Penven, associate director of Residence Life at (540) 231-6205 or
themevt@vt.edu.
