Maintenance & Housekeeping

The Housekeeping Services Division of Student Programs seeks to provide a clean environment for students, faculty, and staff in the campus residence halls and dining centers. Presently, they are responsible for more than 1,000,000 square feet of space. Our houskeeping staff pull more than 600 bags of trash from the residence halls each day! Virginia Tech is proud to offer seven-day-a-week housekeeping service - making us one of the few schools in the country to do so.

Emergency services are available on campus via telephone or by placing a complaint with a residence advisor. Under normal circumstances, all complaints are responded to within 24 hours.

Athletics, Student Activities and Things To Do

At Virginia Tech, we are pleased to offer one of the top sports programs. Twenty-one teams (11 men, 10 women) compete in a variety of sports in the Big East conference. Last year we were proud to see our football team make it to the National Championships in New Orleans to face the Florida State Seminoles. Two years ago, we watched as our Lady Hokie Basketball team made it to the sweet 16 of the NCAA basketball tournament, and our football team was crowned Music City Bowl champions with an impressive victory over Alabama. One of the many benefits of student life here at Tech is free admission to all sporting events. For more information, check out the official Virginia Tech varsity sports site at www.hokiesports.com.

For exercise and student health, Virginia Tech offers a variety of facilities, including War Memorial Gym and The McComas Health and Fitness Center.Ê The McComas Health and Fitness center, opened in 1998, offers truly state of the art facilities, including three gymnasiums, an elevated walking/jogging track, two aerobic studios, a weight training and cardiovascular area, a running, 25 yard swimming pool as well as several other amenities. Both gyms are free of charge for all students. If you happen to be interested in playing intramural sports during your stay in Blacksburg, please check out the Intramural sports link.

Appliance Policies and Refrigerator Information

Electrical appliances such as electric stoves, toaster ovens, air conditioners, space heaters, hot plates and other open-coiled appliances are not permitted in residence hall rooms. One refrigerator is permitted in each room. However, it may not exceed 4.5 cubic feet in capacity with an electrical rating of 120 volts and no more than 2.0 amps when in operation. Small appliances that have fully enclosed heating elements and are UL approved, such as coffee makers, irons, and small microwaves are permitted. Only one small microwave per residence hall room is allowed.

Alterations of any kind to the electrical system are strictly prohibited. Multiple outlet strips are permitted if they are UL listed, have a maximum ampere rating of 15, and have an integral circuit breaker or fuse. Multiple outlet strips cannot be plugged into one another, and only one per student is permitted.

Torchiere style halogen lamps or high intensity lamps are prohibited in residence hall rooms. Multiple fires in student rooms around the country have been attributed to halogen lamps coming into contact with bedding or clothing.

The Residence Hall Federation (RHF) sanctions a number of vendors to rent or sell items for residence hall use, such as refrigerators/microwaves, lofts, carpets and linens. This information is mailed to all students in June. For more information, check out the RHF link below.
