Related Links Greek Life on CampusFraternities and sororities, historically, have been associated with their host university to serve and espouse the purposes and mission of that institution of learning. Virginia Tech, having made the decision to foster and encourage fraternity/sorority experience as one option of leadership training for their students, has affirmed the values which can accrue to the individual students and benefit the varied communities of the institution by membership in such organizations. The Student Activities/Greek Life Staff looks forward to serving our students and communities in the pursuit of excellence for Greek letter organizations. The Oak Lane Community (formerly Special Purpose Housing) at Virginia Tech has 18 fraternity and sorority houses on campus. These houses are available only to members of their particular Greek organization. Because they are located in a forested area beyond the Duck Pond, there is a special shuttle bus that transports residents from the houses to the main campus. Construction has begun to add eight more houses to the community. For more information, contact the house manager for the particular organization. Related Links Computer InformationAll incoming students to Virginia Tech must now have a computer, regardless of major. To make the process as painless as possible, Virginia Tech has set up a page dedicated solely to the new requirements. Some departments and colleges recommend a specific configuration from among the options outlined by the university. Complete information about the requirement will be mailed to all students who accept the offer of admission. Financial aid is available to assist students in their computer purchases. No student will be denied admission to Virginia Tech based on an inability to purchase a computer. Computer use on campus is regulated through the Acceptable Use guidelines. Simply put, these guidelines require you to use your computer in a responsible manner. Among the things prohibited are software piracy, password stealing, and the spreading of computer viruses. Violation of these policies can result in loss of network privileges and/or further academic sanctions. All on campus residence halls are wired with 10baseT ethernet, providing a connection that is up to 100 times faster than a standard modem. All on-campus students receive this connection (as well as an e-mail account) free of charge as part of living in a residence hall. Free technical assistance is also provided to students having difficulties connecting to the internet. Related Links Security, Parking and Campus Mail InformationThe Virginia Tech Police Department works closely with the Physical Plant and the Office of Student Programs to maintain security in all university buildings and residence halls. Security and safety hazards may be reported to the University Police or to the Physical Plant. The employees of the Physical Plant inspect campus facilities regularly, promptly making repairs affecting safety and security, and respond to reports of potential safety and security hazards, such as broken windows, doors and locks. The Virginia Tech Police also work in cooperation with housing staff members to provide security and controlled access to the university residence halls. The "Campus Watch" program places patrol personnel around the residence hall areas, during the hours of darkness. All exterior residence hall doors are locked seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Hall residents may access their own buildings by swiping their ID card in readers located at the entrances. Ê Only authorized personnel, residents and their escorted guests are admitted. Professional staff are available 24-hours a day, seven days a week to respond to emergency situations. All students rooms are equipped with telephones capable of reaching the police dispatcher via the 911 number, and all student rooms are equipped with door viewers to provide an extra dimension of security. It's a student ID, a library card, an athletic ID and a dining plan ID. It's also a debit card that can be used all over campus, as well as several off campus stores and restaurants.Ê The same card can get you into hokie sports events, pay for your laundry, get you a book from the library and a drink from the soda machine. Since it's a photo ID, it's safe to use. In fact, it's used by on campus security - to let people into their residence halls late at night. It's pretty useful to have all this in one card. Don't leave home without it! Related Links Telephone InformationNo need to go out and buy a telephone! All Virginia Tech residence hall rooms come with ROLM Digital phones, offering free voice mail services and affordable long distance. Conventional (analog) phones will not work with the campus phone system, nor will the ROLM phones work if removed from the residence hall. Long distance services are accessed via individualÊ authorization codes, so students never have to fight over a bill. Under a new, simplified rate structure, all direct-dialed long distance calls placed from residence halls will be billed at a flat rate - $0.15/minute, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This rate applies to all calls that can be dialed using an area code including those to Canada and most areas of the Caribbean. International toll calls (those requiring 011 and Country Code) will continue to be billed using tariffed rates. However, these rates will be discounted by 18 percent. If you have any questions, please contact CNS Student Telecommunications personnel at (540) 231-3000 or by email at StuTel@vt.edu. If you have further questions about phone access and rules here at Virginia Tech, please consult the CNS Student Telecommunications Rules and Regulations.
