History

Dietrick Dining Center opened in 1970. This dining center was named after former Dean of Agriculture L. B. "Deet" Dietrick and is one of the largest nonmilitary dining centers in the United States.

On Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, Virginia Tech celebrated the Grand Opening of Dietrick Dining Center's newest restaurant, D2, an international, marketplace-style dining facility, formerly known as The Depot at Dietrick. Reconstruction was completed in an unbelievable 162 days for $6.5 million--that’s $3.7 million more than the whole building cost to construct in 1970 (today Dietrick Hall would cost $30 million to build). The renovation of D2 was performed by architects at MMM Design Group and contractors Branch and Associates, Inc., in partnership with Virginia Tech staff and student advisory committees. Food service consultation was provided by Ricca Newmark Design.

D2 is currently serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner to an average of 3,758 customers everyday. Culinary variety and nutritional choices are abundantly found in D2’s eight shops: Salsas, with Mexican fare; Pan Asia, with wok-prepared Asian selections; Gauchos, featuring skewered meats and other Brazilian items; Mangia, with Italian pastas and more; Eden’s, with fresh vegetables and salads; East Side Deli, with made-to-order sandwiches; Olives, featuring Mediterranean vegan selections; and La Patisserie, with pastries and desserts.

DXpress o pened in 1995 and is located on the lower level of Dietrick Dining Center. Open all day until 2:00 a.m., DXpress is perfect for the student on the run. It offers salads, burgers, late-night meals, and breakfast sandwiches.

In April of 1994, Housing and Dining Services opened its specialty coffee, gourmet dessert, and ice cream shop, Deet's Place, on the lower level of Dietrick Dining Center. Students have the opportunity to study, socialize, and perform, all within the warm atmosphere of Deet's.
