History

Owens Dining Hall opened its doors in 1940. Owens was named after J.J. "Pops" Owens, one of the two mess stewards at the University. Owens originally opened with four individual all-you-care-to-eat rooms. Five decades later, Owens transformed into a more modern facility.

February 1991 brought new meaning to the phrase "state-of-the-art." Hokie Grill & Co. (named by the students in a campus-wide "Name That Room" contest) offered a variety of grilled entrées and sandwiches, a gourmet salad bar, frozen yogurt, and signature desserts in a setting of teal, mauve, and chrome. In August 1997, Hokie Grill & Co. reopened with a brand-new dining idea for college food service: branded concepts. The two cornerstones of this idea were Chick-fil-A® and Pizza Hut®. Chick-fil-A® in its first year of operation became the No. 1 Chick-fil-A® on a college campus in the United States. Hokie Grill & Co. added two additional concepts: Blue Ridge Barbecue in Spring 2002 and Cinnabon® in Fall 2002.

Owens Dining Center is also the home of Owens Food Court, which opened in October 1991. Owens Food Court consists of 12 specialty shops serving international and American favorites including pastas, sub sandwiches, Mexican specialties, Philly cheese steaks, and stir-fry combinations. The individual shops are decorated in brilliant primary colors with attractive signage.

Personal Touch Catering, Virginia Tech's catering service, was created in 1980. It began providing services from Shultz Dining Center until the Owens Banquet Room was completed in 1987. At that time, Personal Touch Catering relocated to Owens Dining Center. Personal Touch Catering offers an array of customized services ranging from early morning coffee services to formal sit-down dinners. Personal Touch Catering is home to We Care, the department that delivers birthday cakes, flowers, cookies, and care packages to students living on campus.
