Shultz Dining Center
HistoryWhen Virginia Tech's enrollment increased in 1961, Owens became too small to feed the volume on its own. Shultz Dining Center was then opened to accommodate Tech's growing population. Shultz is located adjacent to the site of the first mess hall and was named after the University's original mess steward, J.H. Shultz. When specialty lines appeared in the dining halls, Shultz housed Cluck Cluck's, a specialty line featuring chicken and the sensational Mama Mia's, which offered popular Italian foods and an expansive selection of pizza. In August 1995, Shultz opened with a modern new look. It became home to Substantial, Grill Works, Classics, and Home Cookin'. In 2004, Shultz went to a weekday only schedule to better support weekend services at Squires Food Court. Currently Shultz Dining Center is open only for dinner Monday through Thursday and serves home cookin' favorites such as barbecue pork, rotisserie chicken, carved roast turkey, baked potatoes, pasta, and pizza. A soup and salad bar, and dessert bar are also available for students. The Shultz Express, located in the Shultz mezzanine area, opened in the fall of 1999 and began serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The Express offers a salad bar, a hot bar, and other grab-and-go items. |
